Datadog Bits AI SRE vs Operate
Updated 7 October 2026
Datadog Bits AI SRE, which Datadog's product page now calls Bits Investigation, is "an always-on SRE agent built to handle complex troubleshooting and late-night alerts" (datadoghq.com). It investigates alerts inside Datadog and suggests code fixes.
Operate is self-hosted. It reads Datadog logs and Datadog APM through read-only adapters, alongside your database, your code and more than 60 other integrations. If most of your signal lives in Datadog and a vendor-run agent is acceptable, Bits is the natural choice. If the investigation has to run in your own infrastructure, Operate is the option.
Datadog Bits AI SRE vs Operate at a glance
| Operate | Datadog Bits AI SRE | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | A Docker image in your own infrastructure. No new cloud accounts, no SaaS endpoints | Part of the Datadog platform |
| What it reads | Read-only adapters to logs (including Datadog), APM (including Datadog APM), databases, code, CI/CD, feature flags, queues and tickets | The telemetry in Datadog |
| How a fix arrives | A .patch file an engineer reviews and applies | "dynamically suggested code fixes" |
| Tools it works in | Slack, MS Teams or another chat tool; 60+ integrations | "Slack, Jira, ServiceNow, and GitHub" |
| Pricing | $99/month plus usage, published on operatex.dev | AI Credits from $500 per 500 credits a month billed annually, or $1.30 per credit on demand. An autonomous investigation averages about 6.5 credits (pricing) |

Datadog notes that its per-feature credit figures are averages "provided only for reference" and that actual consumption per request may vary.
How Bits AI SRE works, in Datadog's words
Datadog's product page says Bits will "automatically investigate every alert the moment it fires" and "speed up recovery with dynamically suggested code fixes". It runs investigations in parallel and lets engineers discuss findings in chat.
For control, Datadog lists role-based access, "zero data retention for third-party AI service providers" and rate limits with cost controls. Billing uses Datadog's AI Credits, shared across its AI products.
How Operate works
Operate is the self-hosted AI SRE we build. Four AI agents read your logs, database and code to work out what broke and why, and a second AI model checks every answer before anyone sees it.
It runs as a Docker image alongside your app, with read-only access to everything it connects to. It watches alerts and errors on its own, and anyone on the team can ask it a question from Slack, MS Teams or another chat tool. Every investigation ends at a .patch file. An engineer reviews the evidence, applies the patch and decides what ships. See how Operate keeps your environment safe.
When Datadog Bits AI SRE is the stronger fit
- Your telemetry is already in Datadog and you want no additional deployment.
- You want investigation inside the Datadog interface your team already uses.
When Operate is the stronger fit
- Root causes that need your database and code, not only telemetry. The example on our homepage: a migration that dropped an index, found through the logs, an EXPLAIN on a read-only replica and the git history.
- Investigation context has to stay in your network. Pair Operate with a self-hosted model.
- You use more than one observability vendor.
Using Operate alongside Datadog
Operate reads Datadog logs and Datadog APM through read-only adapters. Teams on Datadog can run Operate alongside it for investigations that need the database and the code. Setup is a Docker image plus read-only credentials; see Get started.
