Traversal AI SRE alternative: Operate, self-hosted and read-only

    Updated 7 October 2026

Traversal and Operate both start read-only. Traversal calls itself "the AI SRE for complex systems", built on a "Production World Model", and says it "deploys read-only by default and supports BYOC/BYOM (bring your own cloud/model)" (traversal.com).

Operate is a Docker image in your own infrastructure that reads your logs, database and code, and hands an engineer a patch. It suits teams that want to start self-serve, at a published price, with read-only access that never changes.

How Traversal works, in its own words

Traversal's homepage describes a system that will "triage alerts, find root cause, and prevent incidents at petabyte scale". It builds a model of your production system, which it calls the Production World Model, and searches it for causes with what it calls a Causal Search Engine.

It lists five capabilities: Alert Intelligence, Incident RCA, Self-healing, Code Resilience and Production Support. It runs on top of the observability tools you already use, and it supports running in your own cloud with your own model.

    How Operate works

Operate is the self-hosted AI SRE we build. Four AI agents read your logs, database and code to work out what broke and why, and a second AI model checks every answer before anyone sees it.

It runs as a Docker image alongside your app, with read-only access to everything it connects to. It watches alerts and errors on its own, and anyone on the team can ask it a question from Slack, MS Teams or another chat tool. Every investigation ends at a .patch file. An engineer reviews the evidence, applies the patch and decides what ships. See how Operate keeps your environment safe.

Traversal vs Resolve AI: how they differ

Buyers often compare Traversal with Resolve AI. From their own pages, Resolve AI leads with taking on-call work and mitigating incidents, plus custom agents it manages for you. Traversal leads with a causal model of production for large, complex systems, read-only by default, with bring-your-own-cloud and bring-your-own-model options.

Neither publishes prices on the pages we checked. Operate differs from both: it is self-hosted by design, has no write path at all, and publishes its pricing. Our Resolve AI comparison covers that side in detail.

When Traversal is the stronger fit

    • Large, complex service graphs where a system-wide causal model is the main need.
    • You want automated remediation available, not only recommendations.
    • You want to run it in your own cloud (BYOC) and are happy to scope the deployment with Traversal's team.

When Operate is the stronger fit

    • You want to start self-serve today at a published price.
    • You want product and support staff to ask about production issues in Slack or MS Teams without pulling in an engineer.
    • You want a hard no-write guarantee, not a read-only default.
